How to make rasam
Here is a simple, tasty South Indian Rasam recipe you can make at home 👇😋
Rasam Recipe (Easy & Traditional)
Ingredients (Serves 2–3)
Main Ingredients
2 medium tomatoes (crushed or chopped)
1 lemon-sized tamarind (soaked in warm water)
½ tsp turmeric
1 tsp rasam powder (store-bought or homemade)
½ tsp black pepper powder
½ tsp cumin powder
6–8 garlic cloves (crushed) – optional
Salt to taste
2 cups water
A pinch of jaggery (optional)
For Tempering (Tadka)
1 tbsp ghee (or oil)
½ tsp mustard seeds
½ tsp cumin seeds
1–2 dry red chillies
Few curry leaves
A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
Fresh coriander leaves
🍳 How to Make Rasam
1️⃣ Prepare Tamarind Water
Squeeze and remove juice from soaked tamarind.
Keep aside.
2️⃣ Cook Tomatoes
In a pot, add chopped/crushed tomatoes + salt + turmeric.
Cook until tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
3️⃣ Add Tamarind Water
Pour the tamarind extract into the pot.
Add 2 cups water.
Mix well.
4️⃣ Add Spices
Add the following:
Rasam powder
Pepper powder
Cumin powder
Crushed garlic (optional)
A small pinch of jaggery
Boil this for 5–7 minutes until aroma comes.
5️⃣ Do NOT Over-Boil
Rasam should be flavourful but not thick,
Turn off the flame when it starts forming bubbles (frothy top).
Do not boil too long.
6️⃣ Prepare Tempering
In a small pan:
1. Heat ghee
2. Add mustard seeds → let them splutter
3. Add cumin, dry red chillies, curry leaves, hing
4. Pour this tadka into the rasam
7️⃣ Garnish
Add finely chopped coriander leaves
Close lid for 2 minutes to lock aroma
🍽️ Serve Hot
Serve rasam with:
Steamed rice
Ghee
Papad / pickle
or enjoy as rasam soup.
