How to make pitas
Here’s a soft and fluffy homemade pita bread recipe — perfect for stuffing, wraps, or dips like hummus and falafel 🫓✨
🌾 Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour (or use 1 cup whole wheat + 1 cup all-purpose)
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp instant yeast (or 1½ tsp active dry yeast)
2 tbsp olive oil (or any cooking oil)
¾ cup warm water (not hot)
👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Activate yeast (if using dry yeast):
Mix yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
(If using instant yeast, skip this step — just mix everything together.)
2. Make the dough:
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add yeast mixture and olive oil.
Knead into a soft, smooth dough (about 8–10 minutes).
3. Let it rise:
Cover and let it rest for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the pitas:
Punch the dough to release air.
Divide into 6–8 balls and roll each into a 6-inch circle (not too thin).
5. Cook (two ways):
🔸 Oven method:
Preheat oven to 230°C (450°F).
Place pitas on a baking tray and bake for 2–3 minutes until they puff up.
Remove immediately and cover with a cloth to keep them soft.
🔸 Tawa method (stovetop):
Heat a tawa or pan on medium flame.
Place the rolled pita and cook until bubbles form. Flip and cook the other side — it should puff up.
6. Serve warm:
Perfect with hummus, falafel, grilled chicken, or veggies! 🥙
💡 Tips:
Don’t roll the dough too thin — that prevents puffing.
Keep cooked pitas covered so they stay soft and flexible.
